Workshop: Medium Format + Darkroom

Workshop: Medium Format + Darkroom

Getting to know medium format

A two-day workshop for anyone who wants to try medium format and understand analogue photography better.

Medium format is considered the professional end of photography: the larger film gives more detail and lets you print big without losing quality. It’s used for fashion shoots, exhibitions and photobooks. The workshop gives you hands-on time with these cameras so you can work out which one suits you.

We go through different camera types, how they differ, and the full practical process: shooting on film, developing, and printing by hand in the darkroom.

Every step is explained. Cameras, film, tripods and lighting are provided.

Everyone takes home their own prints, negatives and scans.

You work with the material yourself and go through every stage of making a photograph.

Day one, ~6 hours

  1. Medium format cameras and film: how they’re built, types, how they work.
  2. Studio shoot with a model on black-and-white film (one roll, with professional lighting).
  3. Developing the film by hand in the darkroom, step by step.
