An artist talk with Virgis Augulis-Usinavičius, the Lithuanian photographer whose exhibition My Vilnius is on at Berliner Strasse Gallery from May 16 to July 18.
Virgis Augulis-Usinavičius works with photography as a space for contemplation and for a personal experience of the city. His images do not try to capture an event or serve as documentary evidence; instead they focus on atmosphere, rhythm and the inner experience of being in an urban environment.
An important part of his practice is the panoramic camera, which lets him build the space of the frame differently and change the very sense of time inside the image. As a result his photographs often exist outside the “decisive moment,” leaving more room for silence, observation and a slow gaze.
In the talk he will discuss his approach to photography, working with the panoramic format, the context of Lithuanian photography today, and the project My Vilnius. The conversation will also touch on personal photography, intuition in working with images, and the relationship between the city and memory.
The talk is in Lithuanian with interpretation into Ukrainian.
