Fotosushka: Abstraction

A photograph does not have to show an object. An abstract image conveys an idea or a state through colour, composition and form, while the subject itself may remain unrecognisable. The genre took shape in the early twentieth century alongside the avant-garde: Man Ray and László Moholy-Nagy made photograms without a camera at all, laying objects directly on photographic paper.

We are announcing the theme early so that photographers have time to find an idea, shoot and print. You may already have abstract frames among your negatives.

Fotosushka is a one-day show of analogue photographs, hand-printed by the photographers who took them. Each participant will show one print of up to 30×40 cm; digital prints are not accepted. Visitors will be able to talk to the photographers and swap or buy prints. If you don't have a print yet, you can make one in our darkroom.

Anyone can take part, whatever their experience. Admission is free.
