The Pohliad creative photography association was one of the key circles in Ukrainian photography in the late 1980s and 1990s. It was around Pohliad that a new documentary photography took shape: a new way of talking about reality, people and time through images.
On June 10 Berliner Strasse Gallery hosts a public conversation with Alexander Glyadyelov, the Ukrainian documentary photographer whose work has become an important record of Ukrainian history over recent decades. He has worked on war, social reality, the post-Soviet world and human vulnerability, and was a member of Pohliad.
We will talk about:
— the history and inner atmosphere of Pohliad
— Ukrainian photography of the 1980s and 1990s
— documentary photography as a form of witness
— the photographer’s ethics and working with reality
— photography in times of social change
— personal experience, archives and memory
The conversation is moderated by Volodymyr Tarasov, PhD in history, associate professor and head of department at the Kharkiv State Academy of Culture, and a researcher of photography and contemporary visual culture.
