Alia Siehal: Women in photography

How did women fight for a place in photography when it was considered a “male” profession? Does “women’s” photography have its own distinctive features?

Alia Siehal will trace the history of photography through a gender lens, introducing the women who changed it and showing their iconic work. We will look at different periods and genres, from war reporting and commercial work to conceptual photography, and see how a model photographed by a woman differs from one photographed by a man.

Alia Siehal is an art historian and independent curator. She researches contemporary Ukrainian art, the representation of women in it, regional movements, underground groups and the impact of war on culture.
