We invite you to a lecture-conversation with Volodymyr Tarasov, “Photography During War: A Shift in Vision.”
We will discuss how the full-scale war is changing photography — and how photography, in turn, shapes the way we perceive the war. The conversation will touch on three key dimensions: ethical, political, and viewer-related.
Can photography retraumatize? Where is the boundary between documentation and exploitation? How can we avoid romanticizing war, and is objectivity even possible?
Photography as a tool of propaganda: how to recognize it, how visual narratives operate under conditions of informational pressure, and what happens to the professional ethics of photographers and editorial teams under such circumstances.
We will also discuss vernacular photography — why it exists separately from other genres, and how to work with personal or family archives during wartime. And we will address several other equally important questions.
The event will be an opportunity to rethink how we see, represent, and preserve the war through visual imagery.
The talk is part of the Golden Frame Audiovisual Art Festival, organized by the Faculty of Audiovisual Art at the Kharkiv State Academy of Culture (KhDAK).
