Disco is about togetherness, rhythm and bodily freedom. The genre was born in 1970s New York as a space for those pushed out of other scenes: queer communities, Black and Latino people. The disco floor became safe ground, where dancing was a gesture of freedom and the turntable was the main instrument of the night.

The genre’s foundations were laid by Donna Summer, Giorgio Moroder, Gloria Gaynor, Chic and the Bee Gees. And the cover of Boney M.’s Nightflight to Venus (1978) — glitter, rings of light and weightlessness, assembled from several negatives and finished with an airbrush — shows this aesthetic of escaping reality onto the dance floor better than anything.

Tell us how your records came into your collection and why they matter to you. We will listen together, drink wine and, of course, dance.

Bring records from your home collection, put them on the turntable and, if you like, tell us what they mean to you. Come without records too: to listen, talk and have a glass of wine.
