Vinyl Party: Hip-Hop & R&B

Hip-hop took shape in 1970s New York as part of street culture: strong rhythm, social themes, scratching and sampling. On vinyl, it is lyrics and beats that carry whole stories.

R&B shares the same roots but leans on the voice: it grew out of jazz, gospel and blues in 1940s America, with emotional vocals, a clear beat and songs about love and feeling. Key names include Wu-Tang Clan, A Tribe Called Quest, Lauryn Hill and D’Angelo.

Bring records from your home collection, put them on the turntable and, if you like, tell us what they mean to you. Come without records too: to listen, talk and have a glass of wine.
